The EPI measures the electoral performance of political parties and is used to predict the election results. We use historical data in order to gain insight for the future performance of political parties. In order to guard against hindsight bias, we also use current opinion polls.
The index is divided into two main sub-indexes, viz. the Local Government Election Performance Sub-Index (LGEPS-I) and the National Provincial Election Performance Sub-Index (NPEPS-I)
LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION PERFORMANCE SUB-INDEX (LGEPS-I)
LGEPS-I
LGEPS-I measures the historical electoral performance of a political party at local/municipal government level since 1995 and/or its formation. Our LGEPS-I has the following micro indexes, viz.
The Local/Municipality micro index
This micro index measures the electoral performance of a political party in the local/municipal level since 1995 and/or its formation, on national, provincial and municipal levels.
The District Municipality micro index
The Metropolitan Municipality micro index
The Municipal By-Election micro index
This micro index measures the electoral performance of a political party in the municipal by-elections between the last local government elections and/or its formation.
The National Provincial Election Performance Sub-Index (NPEPS-I)
This sub-index measures the historical electoral performance of a political party since 1994 and/or formation. The measurement is done at two levels, that is, national and provincially.
